Common Flower Myths:

I feel like we have all heard many myths about flowers and the floral industry itself. Well on this episode of myth busters, I’m here to share my knowledge but I definitely don’t pretend to know it all. With all industry things are constantly evolving which makes me a forever learner with you! I’m here to help steer you in the right direction based on what we know so far.

Myth 1: You can get any flowers you want no mater the season

Of course flowers have a naturally growing season! However, the weather plays a huge factor on if the crop is late, early, or if it’s even harvestable. It’s always a better idea to stick to flowers that are “naturally” in season. One upside is that it can be cheaper as we are not paying to have them imported from another area. Also, it illuminates some transportation (getting tussled on a plane, manhandled in the mail, etc.) which will likely result in fresher and less disturbed flowers. Most florists, myself included, are already going to prefer to work with seasonal florals. However, if you are dead set on having a fall flower for your summer wedding, just know that you may be paying extra for that! This leads to my next myth!

Myth 2: Wholesale houses are the best vs. shopping small/local

Okay this one is not a “complete” myth because yes, wholesale houses can have the best bang for your buck. However, shopping local is always a great idea! Here in the pacific northwest we are fortunate to have several wholesale markets that get amazing products(a lot of which do come from local farmers)! They also have the ability to import flowers from different climate areas which allows for a wide range of products to be “in season”. But still remember my warning from above. I still lean toward the local products, but it’s nice to be able to compare these to other items at large at the wholesale markets.

Myth 3: Greenery is Cheaper

This one is a biggie! It’s such a common belief that greenery is cheaper and I hate to break it to you, but that is simply not true. When thinking about bouquets and arrangements, if I’m not using flowers, that space has to be filled with something. It almost always takes more greenery than you think to fill a space so it makes the cost difference pretty minimal in the long run. Also when going for a greenery heavy look, you still need contract. This means having multiple types of greenery within one arrangement to give the texture and depth that we all love so much.

Myth 4: It will be Cheaper if I do it Myself

This goes back to my Ideal budget topic. Yes, you will spend less as you are not paying for labor. But how much is your time worth? Do you really want to spend the week leading up to your event drowning in flowers, tape, wires, ect. If so, all the power to you! Don’t get me wrong, Im all about a good project myself, but it is really worth it? I think you would much rather spend that time relaxing with your loved ones and getting ready for one of the best days of your life! So let me help you by taking on all the stress and anxiety when it comes to flowers!
